374215 01: A heart made of barded wire, and a broken bowl lie atop a grave at the Manzanar War Relocation Center south of Independence, CA, June 25, 2000, where 10,000 Japanese-American citizens were interned during World War II after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. Many citizens never regained their lost property which was sold or given away. A half-century later, President Clinton apologized on behalf of the American people and offered reparations. The National Park Service, which now maintains Manzanar as a national historic site, plans to rebuild at least one of the barracks so that people can better visualize the former war prison.
