Tourists Return To The Mediterranean Island Of Lampedusa Despite The Recent Influx Of North African Migrants

LAMPEDUSA, ITALY – AUGUST 23: People bathe near the island of Isola dei Conigli on August 23, 2011 in Lampedusa, Italy. Isola dei Conigli is one of the last remaining egg-laying sites in Italy for the Loggerhead Sea Turtle. Visitors come to the island for its fine white sandy beaches, its clear turquoise waters and its excellent scuba diving. However, since the upheavals in North Africa, thousands of refugees and would-be migrants have arrived in Lampedusa, setting off a crisis that has come close to overwhelming the tiny island.
